Over the past nine months, the agency has therefore taken measures on a total of 275 charities and societies that did not abide
by the rule.
Among the 108 banned charities and societies are organizations that had no activities during the past three years and those
that returned licenses out of their own free will, the deputy director said.
In this regard, the Manager of Hope for the Youth charity was sentenced to nine month in prison and fined 5,000 birr for raising
public fund without securing permission from the agency.
During the stated period, the agency has diverted over 19 million birr from banned and closed organizations to the agency,
according to Assefa.
There are more than 3,000 local and foreign charities and societies in Ethiopia, it was learned.
Agency Revokes Licenses of 108 Charities, Societies
Addis Ababa June 27/2016 Ethiopian Charities and Civil
Societies Agency disclosed that it has annulled the licenses of
108 charities and socities, out of which 14 are foreign.
In addition, 167 organizations were given from first to final
written warnings and ordered to amend their ways.
This was revealed at a consultative meeting that opened
today to discuss development activities of charities and
societies in Ethiopia.
Presenting a nine-month performance report of Charities and
Civil Societies Agency, Communication Deputy Director
Assefa Tesfaye said there are many organizations that
engaged in activities beyond the objectives of their
establishment, opened bank accounts without the permission
of the agency, and did not submit annual reports as well as
those which did not declare their source of finance.
